Labor Day is here. It’s the unofficial end of summer and beginning of fall. It’s a big weekend for barbecues and parties; but what should you serve? Of course you can always go with the old favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers and potato salad, but there are some great foods that are in season right now that can kick up your BBQ a little.
Sweet Corn
Sweet corn is in season in many parts of the country right now. I actually just had some over the weekend and it was fantastic. It is so sweet that it doesn’t even need salt or butter. You can cook your sweet corn right on the grill. Try leaving the husks on and soaking it in water first so the corn doesn’t dry out. Make sure you buy a lot because your guests will be coming back for more!
Peppers and Onions
Peppers are still in season and onions are being harvested for the entire winter now. Both are tasting fantastic and are loaded with nutrients. Peppers and onions are great on the grill. Clean your peppers and cut them into eights. Cut your onions into quarters or even smaller if you like. Mix the veggies in a bowl with some olive oil and a little salt and pepper. You can place them on the grill in a vegetable basket or even in some foil. They will come out delicious and almost caramelized! They’re great on hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers or even just as a side dish!
Raspberries
Raspberries are delicious this time of year! They make a sweet and refreshing treat at any party. Serving raspberries is a great way to put some fiber and antioxidants into your party meal. You can simply wash the raspberries and serve them fresh or you can use them to make a great dessert. Raspberries and low fat ice cream is a simple, healthy dessert that tastes great. Heat the raspberries in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently, until they break down and make a nice sauce. Spoon over low fat vanilla ice cream and serve right away. You can also use frozen raspberries for this recipe.
Apples and Plums
As fall arrives, apples and plums are in season. Most people will be surprised when you serve apples and plums at your end of summer BBQ. However, once they see how great they taste this time of year, they won’t be able to resist. Here is a great recipe that your guests will really enjoy!
Use these seasonal fruits and vegetables to change up your holiday meal a little. You will be making your BBQ a little healthier and your guests will love it!
