The egg recall expanded to over half a billion eggs on Friday and experts anticipate cases of salmonella will continue to increase. The FDA has already identified hundreds of illnesses that stem from two farms in Iowa – Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms – who buy young chickens and feed from the same supplier and who also “have ties to an Iowa business with a history of violating state and federal laws.”
Here’s what you need to know:
- Salmonella can pose serious health concerns, especially for young children and those with a weakened immune system. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product.
- To decrease risk of illness, FDA chief Margaret Hamburg encourages consumers to strictly avoid "runny egg yolks for mopping up with toast." If you do eat eggs, you should cook them thoroughly and be sure to wash your hands and other surfaces that may come into contact with the eggs.
- The Egg Safety Center has a complete list of recalled eggs including brands and expiration dates.
- Consumers who believe they may have purchased these eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
- Consumers with questions should call or visit www.eggsafety.org.
