So this week I tried the new Lean Cuisine Market Creations Shanghai-Style Shrimp. “Shrimp with udon noodles, snap peas, red bell peppers and carrots in a sweet & spicy Asian-style sauce.” The description had my mouth watering.
I’m always up for trying a new healthy convenience product and this one made some great promises. I cooked the package in the microwave according to the package directions. Unfortunately there was some sort of steamer bag malfunction because during the cooking the steam blew a hole in the seam at the bottom of the bag. This meant that as I picked it up, the sauce leaked all over my hands. Not a good start.
So what’s the big deal with all of these ‘steamed’ frozen meals on the market? Doesn’t anyone realize that even when the food is in a plastic-covered-microwave-tray that your food still gets steamed? I guess it’s the magic of marketing that’s supposed to make us feel like we’re getting something different and special.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that frozen meals, even ones that taste great, NEVER look like the picture on the package. This one was no exception. There weren’t a lot of noodles and the shrimp were very small. However I was impressed that there were more vegetables than I usually see in a frozen meal, about a cup of them.
Unfortunately the amount of veggies was the only thing I liked. The snap peas were overdone and chewy (I’ve never had a frozen meal that does a good job with these) and the red peppers were mushy. Even the shrimp were tough which is surprising since I followed the recommended cooking time for my microwave.
So, did I like it? Let’s just say more of the meal ended up in the trash than in me, I had to go foraging for something else. While I do like quite a few of the regular Lean Cuisine frozen meals, this isn’t one that I’ll be buying again. To use their website rating, I give it 1 star.
Have any of you tried these? What did you think? Should I try another flavor? Let me know.
