| Stay Cool and Fit This Summer |
Many people find it harder to stick to a fitness routine in the summer. The heat can make even the most dedicated fitness fanatic feel like skipping a workout! However, once you stop exercising and get out of your routine, it can be very hard to get back into it. Don’t give up your workouts this summer. Instead, focus on staying cool and motivated!
Summer can be a time for relaxing. Try to get your workout in early each day so you have the rest of the day or some time after work to relax. All you really need to do is get up 30 or 40 minutes early to get a good workout in. The early morning will be the coolest time of the day so you can even get your outdoor workout in before it gets too hot. If you wait until later in the day or after work, you may find the sunshine calling you to relax by the pool instead of working out. If you incorporate your workout into your morning routine, you will be more likely to stick to it throughout the summer months.
If you usually workout outside and find it too hot during the summer, don’t give it up, just change it up. Find a gym or health club that you feel comfortable at and give it a try. Summer is a very slow time for most health clubs so they will be willing to work with you on a membership fee. Ask for a short term membership. Many gyms will sell you a three month membership if you just ask. If you really don’t like working out at a gym, find another indoor activity that you like. Try going to an ice skating or roller skating rink, sign up for a dance class or even try an adult gymnastics class (I did this last year and loved it). You can stay cool inside during the summer while trying something different and staying fit.
When you’re outside at a pool, beach, barbeque or park, get into the game. Summer is a great time for family and friends to participate in games. Bring along something that will get everyone at your get together active. It can be as simple as bringing a Frisbee. If you are at a park, swing on the swings with your children. If you are at the beach, get off your chair and take a walk on the sand or a swim in the ocean. Instead of just lying beside the pool, get in there and play. You can have swimming races or see who can do the best jump. The idea is to do something fun when you’re out with friends and family but also burn some calories and get your heart rate up. Find something that you like to do and ask others to join in. Many people would love to play and stay active but they just need a little push. So don’t be afraid to ask people to join in a game or two with you.
No matter how you choose to stay fit this summer, it’s very important to stay hydrated. Limit the sugary drinks because they are full of calories. Limit the caffeinated drinks because caffeine is a diuretic and can contribute to dehydration. Water is the best drink to keep you hydrated. Drink it often throughout the day. For a little change add some lemons or limes and make sure you put in plenty of ice. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Once you get dehydrated, you may feel tired and weak and will have NO desire to exercise.
Don’t give up your workouts during the summer. Even if you have to take time off for vacation, get right back to it. In the long run, you will be happy that you did.
