 A recent study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention finds a direct link between women who take fish oil supplements and reduced risk of breast cancer. The study looked at over 35,000 postmenopausal women over a 6 year period and found that women who regularly used fish oil supplements had a 32% decreased risk of developing breast cancer (specifically invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type of the disease).
Previous studies looking at breast cancer risk and dietary intake of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA (the same beneficial fats that are found in fish oil supplements) have shown inconsistent results according to researchers. They believe the positive results seen in this study could be attributed to the fact that people don’t consistently get the same amount of omega-3 fatty acids from their diet that they do from taking a supplement.
More research needs to be done before any specific recommendations can be made. In the meantime, we already know omega-3 fatty acids do all sorts of wonderful things for our body like reduce inflammation and reduce risk of heart disease. So continue to focus on getting good sources of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet including fatty fish like salmon, mackerel or herring, canola oil, walnuts, flaxseeds and spinach. If you think you might need a supplement then be sure to talk to your doctor.
