| Step Lively…the More You Step, the Healthier You’ll Be! |
School is out and it’s officially summer. The next 2+ months are filled with vacations, beaches, travel, picnics and parties. While ‘exercise’ probably isn’t the first activity that comes to mind this time of year, the beautiful weather offers the perfect opportunity for all of us to ‘step up’ our fitness.
Now before you tune me out, listen to this. I’m only asking you to take a walk. That’s right, just a nice walk to enjoy the beautiful summer scenery and weather. That walk can have some great health benefits too!
Recent research shows that the number of steps you take each day can significantly lower your risk of disease. As people in the study took more steps their risk of metabolic syndrome dropped, a lot! Metabolic syndrome is made up of a number of risk factors for cardiovascular disease including: abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, high fasting glucose, low HDL cholesterol and high blood pressure. Take a look at this:- Less than 5,000 steps/day = 56% had metabolic syndrome
- 5,000-9,999 steps/day = 40% LOWER risk of metabolic syndrome
- 10,000+ steps/day = 72% LOWER risk of metabolic syndrome
I don’t know about you, but I think those are some pretty awesome results! As someone who can’t run for exercise (knee injury), it’s great to know that something as easy and enjoyable as walking can give me such great health benefits.
What’s my plan? Get myself an inexpensive step pedometer. They’re available just about everywhere for as little as $5. My goal this summer is to increase my daily steps until I’m averaging 10,000 each day, and my new step pedometer will help me get there and monitor my progress.
Want to join me? Grab your walking shoes and get out there. Don’t forget to let me know how you’re doing.
