Head’s up all you sugary cereal lovers of the world! Kellogg issued a voluntary recall of 28 million boxes of breakfast cereal including Kellogg’s® Corn Pops®, Honey Smacks®, Froot Loops® and Apple Jacks®. Products involved in the recall have been shipped throughout the United States and have Better If Used Before dates ranging from March 26, 2011 to June 22, 2011. Only products with the letters "KN" following the Better If Used Before Date are included in the recall.
According to the company the products are being recalled because they “identified a substance in the package liner that can produce an uncharacteristic waxy-like off-taste and smell. The off-tastes and smells are caused by a slightly elevated level of a substance commonly present at very low levels in the waxy resins used to make packaging materials that are approved by the FDA.”
Kellogg also released a statement saying: “While the potential for serious health problems is low, some consumers are sensitive to the uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell and should not eat the recalled products because of possible temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhea.”
If you have kids at home, be sure to check the cupboards since the majority of the affected products are marketed to children. Kellogg is offering replacement coupons for all boxes of affected cereal. However, I have to ask what you’re doing buying this sugary mess for your kids (or yourself) in the first place?
