Insanity!

A few weeks ago, my friend told me she got the Insanity Workout DVD’s and asked if I wanted to try them out with her. I’d read about Insanity through a few blog friends and from everything they’d said I knew it would be, well, insane. I’ve never really done workout DVD’s (unless you count my cousin’s Buns of Steel VHS back in the day), so I thought this would be a perfect way to add some variety to my routine.

There are 10 workout DVD’s in the program that range from 20-80 minutes long, and Shaun T gives you a Workout Calendar which spans a total of 2 months plus a recovery week. My friend had already done the first DVD, which is the Fit Test, so I joined her for the Plyometric Cardio Circuit workout. It’s described as “intervals of intense lower-body plyo and sweat-inducing cardio”. I would simply describe it as “ouch”.

We started off with a warm-up, where I assumed we would do some light cardio, but this was nothing like any warm-up I’d done before! Shaun T went straight into jumping jacks, butt kicks and high knees.10 minutes may not seem like a long time if you’re lying on the couch watching Glee, but 10 minutes of jumps and shuffles do not go by as quickly. When we finally finished (the warm-up), we did some stretching before going into the next segment. The rest of the workout is a blur. More jumping jacks, push-ups, basketball and suicide drills. Yes, suicide drills. What I liked about Shaun T is that he talked us through every exercise, emphasized form and reminded us to drink water. He was even gracious enough to give 30 second breaks. So kind of you, Shaun T! After 40 minutes of “plyo and sweat-inducing cardio”, we were drenched in sweat and curled up in a fetal position in front of the TV.

Despite the sheer “insanity” of this workout, I really liked it and could see myself incorporating it into my workouts. I probably wouldn’t follow the 2-month schedule, since I’m still training for a 5k(and I like my legs), but it’s a perfect way to shake up my routine. That being said, I would not recommend this to beginners or anyone who tends to suffer from injuries. It’s a high-impact program and more suited for already active people who are looking for some variety. I will be going through the rest of the DVD’s in the weeks to come, so wish me luck! If you’ve tried Insanity in the past or are doing it now, what did you think?
