Here comes the sun! It seems as if the nice weather is returning to most of the country. It’s the time of year when many people start thinking about outdoor activities and basking in the sun. While it is well know that too much sun can cause skin damage, many people still don’t protect themselves. Sunblock is the most obvious answer. Opt of an SPF of 15 or above. However, sunblock can only do so much to help prevent wrinkles and sun damage to your skin. Here are some natural ideas to help keep your skin looking gorgeous all year long. - Get your antioxidants! Antioxidants can be a great help in preventing sun damage. Vitamin C can help protect your skin from free radicals which can help prevent wrinkles. If you’re going to be spending time in the sun, stock up on foods that are high in vitamin C or ask your doctor about taking a supplement. Vitamin E is another strong antioxidant. Vitamin E has been found to protect your skin from ultraviolet light as well as from damaging free radicals. Some good sources of vitamin E include almonds, sunflower seeds and spinach. Add them to your diet during the spring and summer months. Another great source of antioxidants is the mineral selenium. Selenium has also been found to protect the skin from free radicals. Good sources of selenium include tuna, salmon and shrimp.
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Some research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help protect skin from the suns damaging rays. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have been found to play a role in overall healthy skin. Most of us get enough omega-6’s in our daily diet however we may be deficient in omega-3’s which are not as abundant in our daily diets. To increase your omega-3 fatty acid intake try some salmon, flaxseeds or walnuts. You may also discuss a supplement with your doctor.
- Green tea extract. Green tea extract has been found to help protect against skin cancer. It has also been used to help prevent wrinkles which can be caused by sun exposure. You can find green tea extract in any health food store. You can use the extract in your tea or water or you can purchase it in pill form. Be sure to check that your green tea is 90% polyphenol extract so that you get the most benefits.
Overall, it is best to limit you sun exposure and to avoid the sun when it is at its strongest which is between 12 pm and 3 pm. However, it’s not always easy to stay indoors during these times so use your sunblock and stock up on your skin protecting nutrients!
