Grab a Kettlebell

Kettlebell training is a very popular form of exercise these days. Kettlebells were used in workouts many years ago and are making a big comeback. Using a kettlebell can be a great way to shake up your workout. What better time to change up your workout then the new year? With that in mind, I joined in on a kettlebell class yesterday. It was a great workout!

A kettlebell is a fitness tool that looks like a cannonball with a handle attached. It sort of resembles an old cast iron kettle. It can also be called a handlebell. Kettlebell training was once thought of as only being for serious body builders or weight lifters; however it has recently gained popularity in gyms and fitness centers across the United States. Almost anyone can do a kettlebell workout. There are now certifications for kettlebell training instructors as well. My instructor was certified and has been teaching kettlebell classes for two years.

The ketllebells come in various weights. You can get a kettlebell as light as 5 pounds or as heavy as 70 pounds. Obviously the 70 pound kettlebells are for seasoned body builders. I brought a 5 pound and an 8 pound with me into class. Men and women can participate in the same kettlebell training class because they can choose a weight that is appropriate and challenging for them. There are many different exercises that can be done with a kettlebell. It can be used instead of dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls and even some weight machines. The class incorporated all different types of exercises. I pushed, pulled and swung that kettlebell. I’m sure I worked every muscle in that class.

Using a kettlebell can be very challenging. Most of the weight is not at the handle. So you can be thrown off balance with certain exercises. You really need to use your back and abdominal muscles during this workout. It’s a great way to strengthen your core and improve your balance. You will work your whole body during a kettlebell class. Surprisingly, I also noticed I was getting a cardiovascular workout. My heartrate was up during most of the class and I was definitely sweating. The class was a challenging and efficient workout with just one piece of equipment.

Kettlebell class can be for everyone, however, make sure you have a knowledgeable instructor or trainer. You can get injured if you’re using a kettlebell that is too heavy or if you are doing the moves incorrectly. If you can’t find a kettlebell class in your area, you can purchase a kettlebell video. If you have never used a kettlebell, try Absolute Beginners: Kettlebell with Amy Bento. If you need something more advanced, try Calorie Burning Workout with Kettlebells, with Gin Miller. You can find many more videos online however, the ones that I mentioned are done by very well respected, experienced fitness trainers.

Why not make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to change up your workout and try a Kettlebell workout in 2010. You will have fun and get a total body workout!
