Nutrition Action 10 Best & Worst Foods

A little while back I mentioned that Nutrition Action was having a subscription special and about a week ago I received my renewal information in the mail. They reminded me that Nutrition Action provides me with the latest life-saving information about the food I eat in a reliable, candid and useful way.

What I like about the nation’s largest circulation health newsletter is that they name names and they interpret health and nutrition study results so readers are not mislead by headlines. They say what is good and bad about specific products and their information is honest, impartial and scientifically based. There are no advertisements and the newsletter is published by the non-profit organization Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). Good unbiased information like this is really hard to find anymore.

They also included their 10 Worst and Best Foods with my renewal notice. I thought it was very interesting and wanted to share that information with all of you. So here are their 10 Super Foods for Better Health. They noted that one would surprise us. See if you can figure which one it is.
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Grape tomatoes
  • Fat free or 1% milk
  • Broccoli
  • Wild salmon
  • Crispbreads (like Wasa, Ryvita and RyKrisp)
  • Microwaveable or quick-cooking brown rice
  • Citrus fruits
  • Diced butternut squash
  • Spinach and kale
And now their 10 Foods You Should Never Eat:
  • Artery Crust – Marie Callender’s Chicken Pot Pie
  • Triple Bypass – Olive Garden’s Tour of Italy entrée
  • Salt’s On – Progresso Traditional, Vegetable Classics, and Rich & Hearty soups
  • Extreme Ice Cream – Haagen-Dazs ice cream
  • Factory Reject – The Cheesecake Factory Chris’ Outrageous Chocolate Cake
  • Smooth Operator – Smoothie King’s Grape Expectations II
  • Top Secret – Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Snack Size Bags
  • Starbucks on Steroids – Starbucks Venti (20 oz) Caffé Mocha
  • Tortilla Terror – Chipotle Chicken Burrito
  • Stone Cold – Cold Stone Creamery Gotta Have It Founder’s Favorite
It appears that these foods were chosen because they had too many calories, too much salt or loads of saturated fat.

So there you have it! But I’m sure that none of our readers eat any of that stuff. The only one that we may have occasionally are the Progresso soups. Just one can of those listed provide a whole day’s quota of sodium. So try Progresso’s Healthy Favorites Reduced Sodium soups instead.

My suggestion is to forget about Nutrition Action’s Worst Foods and concentrate on their Super Foods. We use them all the time in Sensei’s menus and in our blog recipes.

Have a good day!

- Josée

p.s. If you haven’t already figured out which Super Food is the “surprise” yet, it’s the microwaveable or quick-cooking brown rice.
