Josée’s Healthy Holiday Gift Ideas 2009

Christmas is just around the corner and before you know it, you’ll be rushing to the mall for last minute shopping. But why not do your shopping online this year? Some merchants are even nice enough to wrap and ship it for you! This is so sweet and convenient. You can do your shopping in your pajamas without spilling your coffee or getting upset about trying to find a parking spot.

I would love to share with you some good “foodie” holiday gift ideas. Most of them I cannot live without anymore.
  • You know how I feel about plastic and waste. A portable filter bottle is the perfect “eco-friendly” gift for anyone on your list. This company offers several types of bottles, varying in size and filter type. This is so great and cheap if you think of how expensive it is to buy bottled water everywhere you go. Just think of how many times you get charged $2.00 or more for water when you’re out and about. It’s great for traveling too. At least you are sure of the water you are drinking and not contributing to the plastic waste problem. You cannot live without this product now, knowing it exists.
  • I can forgo a lot of electric stuff in my kitchen. I use a manual can opener and a stove top espresso coffee maker, but I need an immersion or hand held blender. Some of them have attachments; it really depends on what you will use it for. You can get a good one for around $30.00. I actually prefer it to a regular blender for soups and jam as I don’t need to transfer hot stuff into a blender or food processor. I think it’s a perfect gift for someone who has limited space or use for larger standard kitchen equipment.
  • Once I found the perfect garlic press, it’s never been too far from me. It has lived with me in Montreal, Ottawa, Guadeloupe, St-Lucia and now Florida. It’s more than 15 years old and still works as well as the first day I got it. Forget the little ones that can only fit a single garlic clove. They break easily, trust me, I know. Check this one or other similar ones like OXO, but read the reviews first. You need one that is big enough to hold a few cloves, made of sturdy metal and it would be best if it contains the least number of parts. Mine is only two parts; no bells or whistles. I recommend not putting it in the dish water though; it will look and work better if you don’t.
  • The kitchen gadget I use the most has to be my oil mister. You see it mentioned on almost all my recipes. I have given it to so many people; I must have bought half a dozen so far. This is the healthier version of non-stick cooking spray. I recommend buying a metal or stainless steel mister as oils are sensitive to light.
  • The other essential in the kitchen is a good pepper mill or grinder. Besides the fact the mechanics have to be sturdy, the other important factor is the ease of use and if it can be used with wet or oily hands. I honestly don’t like the traditional ones that are rounded and made of wood or plastic, they’re too slippery. I always wanted those tall copper ones with a crank lever, but even 15 years ago they were over $75.00. I found a seven inch tall one in a Montreal spice store for $20.00. They are often referred as “Turkish” or “Greek” pepper mills and can vary in style and price.
  • In order to stand on tile kitchen floors cooking all day without back pain, one needs a good pair of shoes. Some people love the Crocs but I’m a big fan of the Fit Flops. I have bought three pairs thus far and am anxious for Macy’s to get more of the new styles as they fly on the racks in no time. I just noticed that they also have winter boots and clogs too. They’re so comfortable that I wear them all the time; at work, home and traveling. I particularly like their new models as they are not as wide as before and available in more colors. I recommended them for everyone.
If you like cool gadget type gifts, please check ThinkGeek...you will certainly find something there.

There you have it; my favorites for 2009. I hope you check them out, try them and let me know if you do.

Happy Holidays!

Peace and love

- Josée

Another great option for a foodie on your list is Sustainable Sourcing https://secure.sustainablesourcing.com. I found a great gift set of Himalayan sea salt and organic peppercorns for my food/cook loving husband. I think he is going to love it! I love that it is a zero carbon gift and they donate to environmental causes!
