Holiday Hangover?

The holidays are a time when people have a tendency to overindulge in alcohol. Even those of us who don’t usually drink alcohol may have a few drinks over the holidays. When you wake up with a hangover, you might be reminded of why you don’t overindulge the rest of the year! Fear not, I have some natural hangover remedies that will help you get on with your holiday festivities without the headache!
  1. Drink up! No, not more alcohol. Try some water, juice, vitamin water or Gatorade. Too much alcohol can cause dehydration which can lead to headache, fatigue and muscle pain. If you remember, try having a glass or two of water before going to bed to help prevent dehydration.
  2. Exercise. Take a walk or go to the gym if you aren’t too nauseous. Exercise can help get rid of toxins in your body. Workout hard enough to be sweating and slightly out of breath. You might feel tired afterward but it will help get your blood circulating and wake up your brain.
  3. Make a smoothie. Try making a smoothie with bananas, berries and low fat milk. The drink will help hydrate you and the fruit will provide potassium, magnesium and other important electrolytes. It will also help raise your blood sugar which can be low the morning after you’ve had a few drinks too many.
  4. Eat asparagus. A recent study to be published in the Journal of Food Science, found that asparagus may help metabolize alcohol. The amino acids asparagus contains can help you break down alcohol faster which means you will be less likely to have a hangover. Try some asparagus in your morning omelet!
  5. Try some ginger. Ginger can help with nausea and upset stomach. Try some ginger tea the morning after your party. You can also take ginger capsules. The capsules come in 500 mg and can even be taken before you go to bed.
Remember, these are natural strategies that won’t have any negative side effects. You can try them whether you have 1 drink or 5 drinks. Hopefully, my tips can keep you jolly this season. Happy Holidays!
