Give the Gift of Fitness this Year

For those of you who HAVEN’T done your Christmas shopping yet…

The average person gains about 5 pounds during the holiday season. Some lose the weight, but most do not. Exercising is a perfect way to burn off all of those extra holiday calories. There are some great items that you can ask Santa for that will help kick start your fitness routine. If you already work out regularly, you might find something to shake up your workout. Either way, here are my top 5 gifts of fitness this year.

  1. Sessions with a Personal Trainer. Sessions with a personal trainer are a great gift for beginners or experienced exercisers. Beginners can get started with the benefit of an experienced workout partner who can show them the basics of exercise. They can also get workouts that are appropriate for them. Experienced exercisers can benefit by changing up their fitness routines. A trainer can give you new and challenging exercises. Personally, I find sessions with a Personal Trainer even better than a gym membership. With personal training sessions, you have an appointment and are accountable to someone to show up and work out. With a gym membership, you may not be as motivated.
  2. iPod. An iPod is a great gift for fitness. To make it really special, download some of your loved ones favorite songs to get them started. Music is a great motivator when exercising. People tend to exercise harder and longer when listening to motivating music. An iPod is great for people who go to the gym to walk on the treadmill, ride a bike or elliptical or lift weights. Music can make the time go faster when working out too. There are many different iPods to choose from so you can spend a little or a lot.
  3. Fitness DVD’s. DVD’s are a great gift for fitness. You can find a good DVD for any fitness routine. You can go online or to a sporting goods store and find DVD’s for everything from Pilates and Yoga to Kickboxing to Senior Workouts. DVD’s are great because people can do them in the privacy of their own home and on their own schedule. DVD’s also come in beginner, intermediate and advanced.
  4. Wii Fit. This is a great gift for anyone that has the Wii system. The whole family can use the Wii Fit. There are activities for everyone. You can do yoga, pilates, kickboxing, balance games and stretching. The Wii is great fun for the whole family. Wii Fit probably shouldn’t be your only means of exercise but it is fun and can get you off the couch.
  5. A Fitness Basket. As an owner of an all ladies health club, I hear all the excuses for not exercising. One excuse that always comes up is “I don’t have the right equipment.” Technically, you don’t need equipment to exercise. However, a nice fitness basket can help get someone prepared to go to the gym or start some other form of exercise. You can include sneakers, fitness socks, a gym towel, a water bottle, a lock for a locker and even a gift certificate for some workout clothes. No more excuses.

Think about who the gift is for and pick the fitness gift that is right for them. Trust me, they will appreciate it more than another tie or a bottle of perfume. Merry Fitness!
