.jpg) Another reason to celebrate! New Year’s Eve is just around the corner and according to a recent study we have one more reason to ring in 2010 with a nice glass of bubbly.
Researchers from the University of Reading found that drinking Champagne may be good for your heart and circulation. According to the report, which is to be published in the British Journal of Nutrition this week, drinking Champagne in moderate amounts (around 2 glasses a day) improves the way your blood vessels function.
Similar to the action of red wine in the body, the health benefits of Champagne are thought to come from polyphenols (plant chemicals from the red and white grapes used in Champagne production). The polyphenols appear to slow down the removal of nitric oxide from the blood, which in turn improves blood flow throughout the body. It is believed that high levels of nitric oxide may also help to decrease blood pressure and decrease the chances of blood clots forming. Drinking Champagne could therefore reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, but more research needs to be done.
In the meantime, enjoy your Champagne and holiday season responsibly. Like we always say, too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily a good thing.
