Burn Off Those Thanksgiving Calories

It’s crunch time. Everyone is planning their holiday meals. Are you planning your holiday workouts? Don’t stop exercising over the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s even more important to keep exercising since you’ll be eating all those extra calories. Any exercise is better than none. Make it simple to stay active over the holiday with these easy ideas.
  1. Work Out with Friends or Family. During the holidays we always have more friends and family around. Get them involved. Whether they exercise or not, try to get them involved in what you’re doing. Take a walk, play a game of touch football or ride bikes. You can do it while the turkey is cooking, after you eat or even Friday morning.
  2. Go High-Tech. Almost everyone has some sort of video game console these days. If you have a Wii, you can exercise right in your home. Buy the Wii Fit as an early Holiday present. With it you can do Boxing, Pilates, Yoga and much more. It’s so much fun to do with your friends and family. You can also get games like tennis and bowling. If your guests have a Wii, ask them to bring some games that will keep everyone moving. If you don’t have a Wii, look for a cheaper version in the stores or ask someone to bring theirs.
  3. Join a Gym. If you’ve been contemplating joining a gym, now is a great time. You can get a great deal on a membership on the Wednesday before or the Friday after Thanksgiving. Sales drop off on these two days so you can probably negotiate a great deal. The personal trainers are usually slow too so you can probably get a FREE workout with a trainer. Just ask.
  4. Go Shopping. Everyone knows that Black Friday is a great day to shop but you can also make it into a great workout. Map out the stores you need to go to. Each time you buy something from a store, bring it out to your car then walk back to the next store. The extra walking is great for burning calories and toning up the legs. You can also get to the mall early and do some mall laps before starting your shopping.
  5. Check your local newspaper. Many towns have a Turkey Trot or a Turkey Burner on the day after Thanksgiving. Join in a walk or run. They are usually for a good cause and can help you burn some major calories.
  6. Do some home improvement. Most people don’t have to work on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Take the opportunity to do some home improvements. Raking leaves, painting, vacuuming, gardening and cleaning out closets can all help burn some calories.
It is estimated that the average American eats around 3,000 calories at Thanksgiving dinner. If you plan on indulging on Thanksgiving, plan on working out too. Then you can enjoy a guilt free Thanksgiving dinner and leftovers without putting on the pounds.

Happy Thanksgiving!
