We’re used to seeing labels on the packaged foods we buy and even stickers on many fruits and vegetables. But a new labeling method is on the horizon for your produce…laser tattooing.
This new method of ‘labeling’ fruits and vegetables only affects the first few outer cells of the fruit or vegetable and will be covered with wax to prevent any drying or contamination. Further testing is underway to determine whether the wax is necessary. Since the laser essentially creates a tiny scab, it’s thought that this should be adequate to protect the fruit or vegetable. While the FDA has yet to give final approval, it is expected soon.
Is this better than the usual stickers? Given that the tattoo won’t affect flavor or quality, it could be an improvement from the sticky labels that are used now.
One huge benefit to the food supply is that these labels could be helpful in tracking sources of food borne illness.
While it will certainly seem strange to buy produce with tattoos, it just might shorten my check out time at the grocery store! I always seem to pick the one piece of produce missing the label…which means waiting while the cashier finds the right code. Another bonus is saying ‘goodbye’ to the sticky goo that labels leave on a pristine piece of fruit or vegetable.
What do you think?

As long as no arm is done in terms of contaminates, I am for it! Very interesting!
