Water, Water Everywhere!

Wherever I go I see someone drinking water. Bottled water is sold everywhere and water bottles that you fill yourself are sold everywhere too. Yet when I ask my clients how much water they drink, they always say, “not enough”. There are so many drinks competing with water now. There’s Red Bull, Celsius, Vitamin Water, green tea, black tea, soda and juice (just to name a few). The list goes on and on. However, water is very important to your health and your body.

The body is about 70% water. Many sources recommend drinking 8 glasses of water a day. This is a great goal but it may not be the right amount for you. If you feel thirsty all the time, that definitely means you’re not drinking enough. Start to get into a routine of drinking a glass in the morning, at lunch, in the afternoon, with dinner and at night. Try to increase your water intake slowly. Cut out one of your other drinks and replace it with water. Slowly move towards drinking mostly water during the day and use the other drinks as a treat. If you are not feeling motivated to drink more water, here are my top five reasons to increase your water intake.

  1. Weight Loss. Water is great when you’re trying to lose weight. It can replace your high calorie drinks, act as an appetite suppressant, fill you up prior to a meal and help you to eat less. Next time you feel hungry, drink some water. Often times we are just thirsty. You will end up eating less and losing weight.
  2. Increased energy. Being dehydrated can lead to low energy levels. It can also lead to muscle fatigue. Once you are feeling thirsty, you are already starting to get dehydrated. Drink water throughout the day to avoid dehydration and keep your energy up. You will also get more out of your workouts.
  3. It’s great for your skin. Water is great for keeping your skin healthy. Dehydrated skin can look wrinkly, saggy and even become itchy. Drinking water can stimulate circulation and flush out toxins to help your skin look healthy and bright.
  4. It’s heart healthy. Drinking water has been found to improve heart health. A six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses. Drink up for a healthy heart!
  5. It can help decrease cancer risk. Drinking adequate amounts of water can decrease the risk of certain types of cancers, including colon cancer, bladder cancer, and breast cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Drinking water is a simple thing you can do to decrease your risk.

I hope these are enough reasons to convince you to start drinking more water. Once you start drinking more water, I promise you will wonder what you didn’t do it sooner. It is refreshing and satisfying and has so many health benefits.

Always good advice & yes, we all don't need the same amount of water. I work out a lot so I may need more than a person that is not as active. Thx for the good tips!
