Stand Up Straight

As a child it seemed like someone was always telling me to stand up straight. My parents, teachers and coaches were always pointing out my slouching. I was the tallest girl in the class so maybe I was slouching a little out of insecurity. As an adult, I love my height. I’m 5’8 and I always stand up straight these days. I’m glad people were always reminding me about good posture because it can really make a difference in your health and well being. If you find yourself slouching or bending over all the time, here are some great reasons to stand up straight.
  1. Bad posture can lead to back pain. Back pain is a very common problem and is the second most reported occupational injury in the United States. Many of us slouch when we sit at our desks or stand at our cash registers. Standing tall and straight can help decrease the pain caused by slouching. Back pain is a big reason for missing work. Fewer days would be lost to back pain if we practiced good posture. Back pain can also keep us from doing things we love such as swimming, gardening or playing with our kids.
  2. Bad posture can make us more prone to bone, joint and soft tissue injuries. We become more susceptible to these injuries because we are misusing our bodies by slouching or leaning over all day.
  3. Good posture can make you look 3 to 6 pounds thinner. Now who doesn’t want to look thinner? You don’t have to do anything else except stand straight and people will tell you how good you look.
  4. Poor posture can effect your digestion. Slouching over all the time can slow your digestion, cause indigestion or even cramping.
  5. Your self confidence may improve with good posture. Standing up tall may make others see you as more confident and capable and therefore your own self confidence may increase.
To practice good posture while you are standing, remember to stand with your feet hip width apart, don’t lock your knees, relax your shoulders and just stand straight. To practice good posture while sitting, keep your feet on the floor, don’t rest feet on the desk or a chair, don’t lean forward, use a chair with a back and get up and move around often.

I’m sure all of this is not what my parents had in mind when they told me to stand up straight, but whatever their reasons, I’m glad they did. Good posture will benefit you in so many ways and it is something you can do right now. Just stand up straight and you are on your way!

I always try to stand & sit up straight! At 5'1" it is even more important! :-) BUT, it is great for posture, core & self confidence too!

I used to slouch, too. In singapore, I used to be one of the tallest and I hated that. Now I straighten up trying to be taller than the tall Caucasian girls. Go figure!
