P90X – Is it for you?
Over the past year there has been a lot of hype about P90X. If you’re interested in exercising and fitness at all, I’m sure you have heard of it. Maybe you’ve seen their infomercial, where the buff instructor and his three super fit participants show off some of the moves. Well, I finally decided to try it for myself. This past weekend I borrowed the P90X series from a friend. I gave myself one weekend to check it out and review it, even though it comes with 12 workouts.

First off, let me tell you that it is not cheap. We aren’t talking about a $10.00 exercise video. Brand new the videos cost $120.00. It can be broken up into three payments of $39.95 or you can probably get one on eBay or Craigslist for much less. I’ve even seen groups that get together to do P90X.

Like I said before, P90X is made up of 12 different workouts. The workouts include: Chest and Back, Plyometrics, Shoulders and Arms, Yoga X, Legs and Back, Kenpo X, X Stretch, Core Synergistics, Chest Shoulders Triceps, Back and Biceps, Cardio X, and Ab Ripper X. All the classes are led by Tony Horton. He’s in great shape and has a pleasant personality. I actually did all 12 workouts in two days and trust me I was tired (I don’t suggest anyone try that at home). The moves in most of the videos were pretty basic but he does take them to a higher level of difficulty. Some of the videos are harder than others and some of the moves would be difficult even for someone in good shape.

The videos are supposed to be done consecutively over 12 days and you continue to do them for 90 days total. I’m sure that if you weren’t working out consistently before you started these videos you would see results after 90 days. According to Tony, the secret to the success of P90X is the advanced training technique called “Muscle Confusion”. This by the way is not a new concept. The idea is to keep doing different workouts so that your muscles don’t get used to the same moves and stop responding or plateau. I do agree that it is great to mix up your workouts and 12 videos gives you a lot to choose from. You probably won’t get bored with the videos for at least six months. My personal favorites were the Yoga X which was more athletic than many yoga classes and the Core Synergistics, but most of the other videos were good too. As I said, some moves will be too hard for many people but there are so many other moves that it won’t matter if you skip one or two.

Overall, I give this video series a “thumbs up”. I think it gives a lot of variety and will help keep you from getting bored. The moves are safe for most people and Tony’s explanation of the moves is pretty good most of the time. If you’re a beginner, I would suggest not pushing yourself to do the amount of repetitions that they do on the video. Start slowly and build up to doing the entire set of videos. If you master them, never fear, they just came out with P90X Plus, The Next Level. I haven’t seen it yet but I’m sure I will. If you can get this set of videos for half price on eBay or Craigslist, I think it would be a great investment. It’s not too gimmicky and most of the moves are tried and true. Of course, the marketing of it is fantastic but if you can get past the hype, you really can get a good workout.

I have been reading & seeing these workouts for a couple years now & they look like my type of thing although I have never tried them. I am a gym rat but maybe one day I will try.. too expensive right now!
