Have Your Cake & Eat It Too

Okay, I admit it, I love dessert. I could actually skip most meals and go right for the dessert if I thought no one would notice, but being a dietitian people always watch what I’m eating. Skipping right to dessert would definitely create a stir. Sometimes people are surprised that I’m even eating dessert at all. Whenever someone makes a comment, I take the opportunity to let them know that you can have your cake and eat it too. Not all desserts have to ruin your attempts at weight loss or weight maintenance. Here are my top ten healthy desserts that actually make you feel like you’re eating dessert.
  1. Low fat angel food cake with fresh fruit. This is fantastic when you have some great fresh berries. Add a little cool whip for an extra treat. This dessert is low calorie and low fat.
  2. Graham cracker ice cream sandwich. Spread some low fat cool whip between two graham crackers and freeze. This is very tasty and much lower in fat and calories then a regular ice cream sandwich. You can add anything you like to the cool whip. Try some chocolate sprinkles or peanut butter chips.
  3. Spiced baked apple. Peel and core an apple, cut into slices and sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg and a little sugar. Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute or until soft. This tastes just like an old fashioned baked apple but has less then 100 calories.
  4. Popcorn (air popped or light microwave). You can dress popcorn up any way you like. I love to put a little bit of melted light butter mixed with cinnamon and a little brown sugar. This keeps the dessert low fat and if you share it you can keep it under 200 calories.
Frozen cherries. When you freeze them, they come out like little pieces of candy. Add some light cool whip for an extra treat.
  5. Grilled fruit. After a barbeque, forget about the marshmallows and grill up some fruit instead. Grilled pineapples and bananas are my favorites. You can add a little drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of brown sugar. YUM!
  6. Good old fashioned chocolate pudding. You can use the light pudding mix and low fat milk. I feel like a kid again whenever I eat this.
  7. A cup of hot chocolate with a scoop of cool whip on top. Look for reduced sugar varieties and make with water or low fat milk. This treat is especially great if it’s cold outside.
  8. There is always room for Jell-o. Try mixing in some light cool whip and fruit and it becomes a great dessert.
  9. 5 Hershey’s Kisses. These are perfect for when you absolutely must have some chocolate. Limit it to five per serving to make sure the calories and fat stay low.

So there you have it…my top 10 favorite low calorie desserts. I always say, “All things in moderation.” Dessert is no exception.
