Have you heard of Budokon?

Have you heard of Budokon? It’s a form of exercise that is really gaining popularity lately. You might have seen it in People Magazine or on Entertainment Tonight. It’s very popular with celebrities. It has been billed as the new “Miracle Workout”. I’m pretty sure it isn’t a miracle workout, but I did finally take a class last week and I really did like it. It was tough!

Budokon was created in 2001 by Cameron Shayne. The class combines yoga, martial arts and meditation to create a fat burning workout that also challenges your flexibility. It will give your mind and body a workout. It’s different than a yoga class and not quite like a martial arts or Tai Chi class. It is quite vigorous and uses strength building yoga poses and heart pumping martial arts moves. Shayne claims that the class will help you develop synergy. He says that Budokon is a living art and claims there are no gimmicks associated with this class.

Budokon actually means, “Way of the Spiritual Warrior” in Japanese. According to Shayne there are three steps to doing Budokon.
  1. Study the moves and do them regularly; keep a fluid motion with your body and keep an open communication with your mind.
  2. Learn the 10 cultivations of Budokon along with the food guidelines.
  3. Keep a rhythm; moving from the peaceful yoga poses, to fast moving cardio kicks, to the seated meditation as the final part of the class.

Budokon class can end up being different each time you take it, which I like. I’m all about diversity when it comes to working out. It will always start with light meditation before getting into the yoga poses. The yoga poses will challenge you. The second part of the class focuses on kicks and punches. The class always ends with shavasana or corpse pose. During this part, you relax, let go of tension and meditate.

I have to say, I did like the class a lot. My instructor was very knowledgeable and helpful. It was a great workout and was different then anything I’ve been doing lately. I am usually not one for meditating since I’m very Type A. I usually have a hard time clearing my mind, but at the end of this class it seemed easy to relax. I will definitely take this class again. To find a class or instructor near you check the Budokon website. They also sell DVDs if there is no class near you. Since the workout is fairly new, there may not be a class near you yet but I’m sure there will be soon.
