What foods other than meat contain vitamin B12? I’m not a vegetarian but I am just interested if you can have a meat free diet and get sufficient vitamin B12 without the need to take supplements. Can you get it from foods if you are a vegan or vegetarian?
Great question! B12 deficiency is definitely a concern for vegetarians and vegans. The best sources of Vitamin B12 are foods that come from animals including meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products. Plant foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, etc.) are not a good source of vitamin B12. If you’re a lacto-ovo vegetarian, meaning you still includes eggs and/or dairy in your diet, it will be easier for you to meet your vitamin B12 needs. For vegans or other more strict vegetarians, B12 fortified foods are available including soy milk, soy powders, breakfast cereals and meat substitutes. You can also use a product called Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula Nutritional Yeast. It provides a “cheesy” taste to foods and is a great source of B vitamins. Try sprinkling it on popcorn, soups or salads.

great post! I've always wanted to try that nutrional yeast. I think I will pick some up from WFs as I have really started to move away from any form of meat!
