Stop the Ride, I Need to Get OFF!

Ahhh…family vacation. I remember it well. My dad would start out driving with me, my mom, my brother and our dog in the car. We would all be excited to be going on vacation. We would usually drive 5-7 hours in either direction of our home to reach our destination. About 1-2 hours into our drive my mom, brother and dog would all start feeling sick. Inevitably one of them would vomit, the car would start to smell and my dad would light a cigarette to “cover the smell.” I know that was not the best idea, but you can’t just make this stuff up! My mom and brother still get motion sickness on car rides, boat rides, plane rides, roller coasters and even ferris wheels. Motion sickness can really put a damper on a vacation.

With this year’s vacation season in full swing, I’m sure many people are experiencing motion sickness on their summer trips. Motion sickness medications are being taken by millions of people. These medications work for some but not all and may have side effects. The good news is that there are some natural remedies that can help keep motion sickness to a minimum this vacation season.

Whether you are going on a car, boat or plane, or just want to enjoy an amusement park, you can try some of these natural remedies to help keep your motion sickness at bay.
  1. One day before you start traveling avoid high fat, greasy meals. Also keep your diet kind of bland. Avoid too many spices. The more bland your diet just before and during your trip the less likely you will be to feel nauseous. Pack some dry crackers or another plain, dry snack to nibble on when you feel nauseous.
  2. Stay hydrated before and during your trip. Drink a lot of water. Avoid caffeinated coffee, soda and tea. Caffeine is a diuretic and can perpetuate dehydration.
  3. Ginger has been found to reduce motion sickness. Try eating some crystallized ginger before and during traveling. You don’t need much and you can purchase it at any health food store. You can also sip some ginger tea. Check with you doctor if you are taking any medications.
  4. Peppermint has been found to be helpful in warding off motion sickness. You can sip on peppermint tea or even try some peppermint candies, but the tea has been found to be more useful.
  5. Try a little salt. If you are feeling queasy, try eating something with a little salt. It seems to help. Don’t eat too much salt because you don’t want to get dehydrated.
  6. Don’t try to read or play games. Just relax. Keep your head up and back and don’t look around too much.
  7. If you have continued, severe motion sickness, you can also ask your doctor about acupressure.

Hopefully some of these strategies can help alleviate your motion sickness so you can enjoy your vacation this year.

I am so glad I don't have this prob. My sis did as a kid & always said sitting in the front seat of the car helped her. I think she just wanted less crowded conditions! :-)

lol, that title...so ME. I once rode a Viking and got so terrified they stopped just for me. But I don't think mine is as serious as this, though, thank God.
