The other day I overheard two ladies talking about how they had lost weight. One was praising the benefits of acai berry juice, and the other was attributing her weight loss to grapefruit juice. If I wasn’t a dietitian I would have ran to the store to buy some. As the conversation continued, one said that she is now walking one to two hours, five days a week and that she hasn’t eaten in a restaurant for a month. She’s also not eating chips or cake, and she no longer eats a 12 oz steak! (By the way this woman is not even 5 feet tall).
The other woman says she drinks a glass of grapefruit juice while preparing dinner instead of drinking half a bottle of wine and snacking on junk food. She also admits to not eating chicken wings and not eating all the large restaurant meals or ordering her usual key lime pie despite being full from her burger and fries.
All these wonderful changes because of the magical effect of fruit juice! Hello? It’s not the juice…it’s the decision to do something about that extra 25 pounds. Same thing goes for weight loss supplements; we are taking something that might help us lose weight, but in reality we change some behaviors too. And what gets me is that neither of them took credit for making these healthy changes. They claimed the juice did it. If they don’t take credit for the weight loss and changing bad eating habits, what will happen when they stop drinking the juice?
So what if you have an extra 25 pounds but you eat healthy food, you exercise regularly and you have a good mental attitude. Are you happy? Are you healthy? But don’t get me wrong, if you have an unwanted 25 pounds and you don’t eat healthy, don’t exercise regularly and you have a miserable attitude, it will get to you. Young adults think that they can eat what they want and they will be fine. But the body can only take so much abuse before breaking down. So take care of yourself and your body will reward you. And if you are doing your body good take the credit, you deserve it (not the juice or pills) and congratulations!

I have heard this type of talk too & especially on the entertainment shows. It is like, DUH, how stupid are we.. you changed your exercise & eating habits.. there is nothing magical about that. Common sense! Good post!
