Does Exercise Affect Blood Sugar?

I’ve been getting light headed if I’m not able to eat within an hour of running. I have naturally low blood sugar (fasting in the 40’s). Does running affect my blood sugar?

Great question! And the answer is…yes, exercise absolutely affects blood sugar. In general, physical activity tends to lower blood sugar. Blood glucose (blood sugar) is actually the main source of fuel burned during exercise, especially during high intensity exercises like running! Your blood sugar will also continue to be affected even after you’re done exercising. That’s why it’s really important, particularly if you have naturally low blood sugar, to eat something before and after you exercise to prevent your blood sugar from getting too low. It’s also important to eat balanced meals at regular times throughout the day with adequate amounts of carbohydrates.

My suggestion would be to eat a light snack like yogurt and fruit, cottage cheese and crackers or half a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread about 30 - 60 minutes before you exercise. Don’t eat too much too close to your workout because it can cause cramping. Everyone is different, so you need to find an amount that works for you. Also be sure to eat a balanced meal that contains carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats within 1-2 hours after you exercise to prevent low blood sugar.

Good luck!

You are so right.. this is so individual! I need my stomach pretty empty before I exercise otherwise I feel like crap & I do a heavy duty workout but it worked for me but most likely not others. BUT, I do eat a combo of protein, carbs & fat within an hour after my workout!
