Are you a coupon cutter?

Every Sunday millions of people look through the newspaper and clip coupons for various food and health products. Sometimes it’s for something they want or need but many times it isn’t. In this economy everyone is looking for a deal or a discount. I know because I’m one of them! Using coupons to save money on food is a great idea. They can really help if you use them wisely. Just because you have a coupon, doesn’t mean you need that product or that you can’t find a better deal once you get to the store. Learn to be a savvy shopper with your coupons by following my suggestions below.
  1. Clip coupons for things that you regularly buy such as toothpaste, paper towels, yogurt, milk or bread. You know you will use these items once you buy them and saving a little money on them is a bonus.
  2. Try not to clip coupons for items that you’ve never wanted and may never use. If you don’t drink coffee, don’t clip a coupon for a new gourmet coffee just in case you have guests over. You will probably never use it. Once you have the coupon in your hand or wallet, you will be tempted to use it. Don’t spend the money on something you don’t need or want just because it’s discounted.
  3. Compare prices. Even with a coupon, an item may be more expensive than a comparable item. For instance, you may have a coupon for $1.00 off of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, but the store brand ice cream at regular price may still be cheaper. Of course, if you love Ben and Jerry’s and would buy it anyway, use the coupon, but don’t forget to check around in the store and always check the prices of the store brands. They can usually beat other brands even when you have a coupon.
  4. Check the store circular. Often times a store will advertise special sales or coupons in their circular only and not in the paper. Also, look for coupons in the aisles as you shop. You can find many unadvertised specials with these coupons. Again, if it’s something you and your family won’t use, DON’T buy it.
  5. Check the internet. You can find tons and tons of coupons on the internet. It sounds time consuming but it really isn’t. You can scan for coupons or discounts on the items that are already on your list. Check out some of my favorite websites for coupons:
  • Coupon Surfer - you have to register but they don’t want much information and will send you coupons via email.
  • RetailMeNot – you have to register here too.
  • For specific items try the company website. For example, Organic Valley for organic milk coupons, Stonyfield Farm for organic yogurt coupons or even Healthy Choice for coupons for their frozen meals.

It won’t take much to become more of a savvy shopper with your coupons. Don’t forget to search for, clip and use only the coupons that are for items you will actually use. Good Luck! Maybe you can save enough for a great vacation next summer! That’s my goal.

Great post & advice! Yes, I clip coupons for food & all other necessities!!! Got to but like you said, be savvy! Sometimes things are cheaper without the coupon or another brand.
