Is it healthy to eat small frequent meals?

Is it healthy to eat small meals all day, like some fruit here and there or a protein bar, as opposed to eating 3 big meals?

It’s definitely better to eat small frequent meals throughout the day. You can actually eat the same amount as you usually eat in 3 meals, and spread your intake out throughout the day. This is better for you because you provide your body with a constant flow of energy. No peaks and valleys in your blood sugar, just good consistent energy. Understand that what you eat should be able to provide you with the energy you need for the next activity. So, if most of your activity/work is during the day, that’s when you need to provide your body with energy to sustain that activity. If you are going to have a couch day, then you don’t need as much energy (food).

To provide your body with sustainable energy always mix a source of high fiber carbohydrate with a source of protein. While the carbohydrates provide you with energy (glucose), the protein and fiber make it last longer by tempering the release of glucose into the blood.

Good snacks or “small meals” would be half a sandwich on whole grain bread, yogurt and a fruit, milk and a fruit, cheese and a fruit or vegetables/vegetable juice, a cup of bean soup, hummus and vegetables, beans right out of the can, whole grain cereal and milk, nuts and fruit, baked sweet potato with sunflower seeds or even a little plate of leftovers (too small for a meal but enough for a snack).

I hope this is helpful. Enjoy the grazing!

I am so a mini meal person!!!! For me, I like to eat so I like knowing food is coming my way every 3 hours or so. I plan my food & mini meals so I don't overeat. I know some don't like this plan & people have to do what works for them BUT for me, small meals is the way to go so I don't get too hungry & then grab anything in site!!! :-)

To lose weight, I set a calorie limit that was much lower than I was used to eating. Eating smaller meals spread out throughout the day helped me to not feel so hungry all day. I definitely think it is healthier because it keeps your metabolism going.
