Sisterhood of the Traveling Bra
Traveling just isn’t fun, or comfortable, anymore. I do the best I can to amuse myself, chatting with grumpy people in long security lines and analyzing my fellow passengers “travel personalities”, awarding points based on their agility and decision making skills. Points are awarded based on their decision to hop around and try to pull laced-up shoes back on while holding carry-on items in one hand and the bag everything came out of in the other, or their style and skill tiptoeing barefooted to the nearest chair to re-organize.

Whether you are a sloppy hopper or do the barefooted tiptoe to get there, just sit on that chair when you have a little extra time before your next flight, and watch the pre-flight security screening show.

After a while you can just tell who is going to sail right through and who (yes, me) is going to bring the whole process to a screeching halt. I’m sorry, but I need those sweet potatoes, and those other things which might seem unnecessary or ridiculous to you (and everyone behind me), but comfort me. I’m always curious to see what other passengers NEED and who gets away with carrying-on what. Wouldn’t Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones, “the quintessential American hero” have to carry on his whip, his hat, and his old leather bag? With his smile, he’d have no problem. That’s one reason why I love him, but all men just seem to be lighter travelers in every way. I think it’s their underwear. Women seem more weighed down, physically and emotionally.

My Kindle was supposed to make me a light traveler, but I left it home because my friend Kayla, who is only 12 years old, said she and her mother decided I had to read Ann Brashares The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Since I was traveling, and they brought me all four books, I couldn’t resist her logic or her gift. I really, really loved books one and two. Their sisterhood is what we all want. Their bonds of friendship and understanding unite, protect, support, forgive, and remind each girl to live up to her highest expectations.

It was really poignant reading on the way to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday with her 10 closest friends who have shared their sisterhood for 60 years.

I called Kayla’s mother when I landed to thank them and ask why they chose these books for me. She told me I carry too much junk when I fly because I forget I have everything I need…my husband, kids, friends and good health, that don’t weigh anything, fit perfectly, and never wrinkle. I told her I have some wrinkles, and that I was very sad because after a three hour flight I realized that the author was obsessed, but would never ever write about women who own, share, or travel in the perfect bra, forget one that could fit 4 friends with different size chests. I usually have a light, stretchy bra for flying, but I wear a better one to the airport and change later. Too many women wear the little stretchy one the whole time, and it’s just not a good look. Of course, she had already hung up on me. But Kayla was still there, giggling like a 12 year old. She said I’m glad you like the books, Nancy. I knew you would. I love the pun about the authors’ name. My mother will get it eventually and call you back.

I’m still waiting.

- Nancy
