| Kirstie Alley |
After Valerie Bertinelli appeared on People Magazine’s April 06, 2009 cover in a bikini, the next issues Mailbag was filled with conflicting comments and emotions. Some readers were inspired, reminded that weight loss is a slow, steady process that ought to give way to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Some were filled with despair, believing that ‘Stars’ have access to weight loss secrets the rest of us do not.
I felt like we were all driving past the wreck of the spokeswoman formerly known as Kirstie Alley. I was torn by twin desires to peek at the wreck as I drove past, and the need to keep my eyes on the road with gratitude for my own well being…weight wise. Kirstie’s May 18, 2009 People Magazine cover allowed me to stare, but I still feel survivors’ guilt. The unfortunate truth is that losing the weight is only a ‘portion’ of the battle. Successful maintenance is the victory, and that only goes to those who conquer their inner and outer demons. Kirstie Alley and Oprah have more help than you and I do trying to lose weight, for sure, but they still feel and fail alone.
A few weeks ago Josee explained that the missing links, “The real work”, is dealing with the emotional issues of weight gain. Until we learn to deal with the source of the attraction of food as comfort, and educate ourselves so we can eat real food in the real world, we can’t be successful. We doom ourselves to the roller coaster. Healthy, happy living means we have to master the process of identifying, cooking, and eating “normal food, smaller meals, colorful fruits and vegetables without extra butter, oils and sauces” out in the real world, forever and forever, after the “diet,” Amen. That is Josee’s ‘secret’, if there is one, to “getting rid of it (weight) for good.”
Kirstie is promising to “get back in shape,” “run a marathon,” “create a weight-loss system,” and “rock a new body” as she writes the next chapter of her life. She’s smart, funny, talented, and beautiful, and someone we can all relate to because her struggles have been so public. The problem for Kirstie, Oprah, you, and me, is that at the end of the day, when the cameras are off, or we’re home from work, or the kids are in school or asleep, we have to choose to ‘deal or no deal’. Kirstie didn’t deal yet. Until she does, she won’t find the ‘secrets’ Josee wants all of us to take to heart. She still has a ticket to ride.
If you want to get off the roller coaster, follow Sensei to the exit.

Really good post! I like this statement:at the end of the day, when the cameras are off, or we’re home from work, or the kids are in school or asleep, we have to choose to ‘deal or no deal’.
It was very obvious that Kirstie has not dealt with the probs that made her gain & then regain the weight. She is not ready to offer up a weight loss program. To me, she was in total denial.
You set out very good points & the emotional aspect as well!

Hi Jody, thanks for your comments. George Harrison said “It Don’t Come Easy.” His variation of your “Loving and accepting yourself is the first step in leading a better life.” I liked your link to Wendy Strgar. Permission to love because you do…isn’t diminished by someone’s “failure” to love you back.
