Go GREEN With Your Fitness Program

Everyone’s talking about going green lately. My friends are making changes in their daily lives to be more environmentally friendly. I recently came home to find my kids and the babysitter watching a movie in complete darkness. When I mentioned that it looked like a movie theater, the sitter said she was going green and there was no need for the lights to be on. I agreed. After that, I started thinking of some simple things I could do to go green. I workout almost every day, so I decided to start there.

The first thing I noticed is that I was using a lot of bottled water. Until recently, I had always used a reusable bottle for my water, but for some reason I switched to bottled water. That means that I was using a different plastic bottle six days a week. Well I ditched the bottled water and went back to my reusable water bottle. Over a year, that will be a lot less plastic bottles to throw away and/or recycle.

Secondly, being the owner of a gym I had to take a look around my facility. One big thing I noticed is that the lights, televisions and radios were left on all day, even when no one was around. I informed the staff of typical slow times and asked them to turn off televisions, air conditioning and lights as needed during these times. If you go to a gym regularly, you might be able to mention this to the owner or manager. Most gyms keep TV’s and lights on all day and night. Turning off lights and TV’s for even one hour per day can make a difference.

Thirdly, I recycled my sneakers! People who work out regularly can go through a lot of sneakers. Nike has a program called ReUSE A SHOE where you “recycle” your sneakers. The program takes your old sneakers and turns them into sports court material. You can ask about the program at your local shoe shop or check the Nike website for more details.

Next, I invested in some organic workout clothes. You can find reasonably priced organic clothes on the internet. Try lululemon for some nice organic clothes. Since I create more laundry by working out every day, I started washing my things in eco-friendly detergent. Check out Melaleuca for some great organic laundry detergent.

Lastly, I decided to ride my bike to the gym. I only live 1 mile from the gym, yet I always drive my car. Now that I’m getting a little greener, I’m trying to ride my bike more. I’m also encouraging my friends and members at the gym to use their bikes. You might recommend it at your gym. Together we can significantly cut down on gas use and emissions. I also decided to make biking my main workout one day a week. This way, I won’t have to be in the gym. Treadmills and other machines use a lot of energy and biking outside can cut down on that energy use.

Well, those are my green fitness ideas. You might be able to think of more great green fitness ideas. Every little bit will help!

Good stuff! I have a water filter on my faucet at home & I also have health safe bottles to put my gym water in. My running store also has the "bring in your old shoes" barrel. I love lululemon but can't afford their clothes, unfortunately. Good points for people though & small steps are better than none!

great post. I am debating up giving bottled water and going to the aluminum canisters. Like Jody said small changes make the difference.
