Effortless Weight Loss
In the Why “Diets” Don’t Work blog, I mentioned to cut out 300-500 calories a day and include daily walks into your lifestyle to get rid of some extra pounds. The easiest way to cut these calories, if you already eat healthy…meaning you rarely consume chips, fried snack foods, cookies, ice cream, candies or chocolate, and seldom drink alcohol on a daily basis or eat in restaurants where most of the offerings are fried…is to watch the little extras. For example, Lauren ordered a salad for lunch yesterday and the restaurant gave her three containers of salad dressing! Why, is one not enough? Last week I ordered stone crab when I was out to eat and the same thing happened; they gave me two containers of mayonnaise “stuff” (probably some kind of tartar sauce), plus two pats of butter and a container of sour cream for my small baked potato. I was having a healthy dinner, stone crab and steamed lobster, and if I had used the “extras”, I would have consumed over 700 calories that I didn’t want or need.

Each 1 ounce container of the mayonnaise “stuff” is around 200 calories, so that was 400 calories saved right there. Each pat of butter is 50 calories, and 1 ounce of regular sour cream is 60 calories. Plus, they gave me about 1 oz of melted butter with the lobster, which is another 200 calories! Ok, maybe crab and lobster isn’t your style, but what if you go to a restaurant and order a hamburger. You order, and the thoughtful server asks you if you want cheese and bacon too. That sounds delicious, why not? Would you like fries with that? Of course! Can’t have a burger without fries, but make them sweet potato fries please, to make it a healthier lunch. Ordering a burger is ok; as for the cheese and bacon, they usually add two slices of each. Each 1 ounce slice of cheese is at least 100 calories, two slices of bacon is anywhere between 80-150 calories, and the fries will definitely be at least 400 calories. Hopefully your burger didn’t come with a chipotle or wasabi sauce of some kind, because those sauces are usually made from mayonnaise and could give you an extra 200 calories on top of it.

The extras add up! Think about it. 500 extra calories a day adds up to one pound gained at the end of the week. Or you can break it down to a smaller amount than that. 50 extra calories a day adds up to five pounds gained at the end of the year. But the good news is…if you cut down 50 calories each day, you loose 5 lbs at the end of the year. If you walk 30 minutes 4 times a week, that’s another 500 calories burned each week. So to lose weight with minimal effort, try cutting out the extras (even just an extra 50 calories a day makes a difference) and adding regular walks. Try it, you might be surprised!

I love this post. People know this but they just don't follow it! I also did a post a while back on a story off The Today Show. A nutritionist had a client carry a ziplock bag & put in it all the "little extras" she was going to eat rather than actually eat them.. like candy from a candy dish at work, french fries off another person's plate, picking at food she was cooking etc. This person was complaining that she was not losing weight. Well, this showed why. She was consuming almost 1000 calories in a day with picking!!!!!

People need to pay attention to these little things that add up to big pounds!
