| The Weight Loss Roller Coaster |
I like Kirstie Alley. I think she's a funny actress and absolutely beautiful, what ever the scale says. What saddens me is that so many people go through the same thing she does over and over again; this yo-yo dieting. But in her case, she has millions commenting and judging her weight and consequently her as a person, without really knowing who she is. It’s hard enough to get rid of some weight, but in the public eye, that has to be tough.
I actually made reference to similar diet plans last week, where people don’t want to have to think about what to eat: “Just give me the stuff I like, make me loose weight, I don’t care how much it costs as long as I loose weight.” Yes, this type of diet plan works, but only while you do it. Once you’re done, you have not learned what to eat, how to shop, prepare meals or eat out. People don’t want to do the work either physically or mentally. Often, weight problems, and this is for which ever direction the scale points, have an emotional component and if not dealt with, the issues will remain. And that’s where dietitians find it difficult to see people go on “crash or non-healthy or short-term” diets because we know that most probably people will regain their weight and a little extra too. That’s when they finally come and consult with us and say: “You’ve got to help me, I’ve tried every thing, I’ve spent a fortune and you are my last resort”. And deep down we think “why didn’t you come and see me in the first place, we would have been ahead already”.
Don’t think that gastric bypass surgery patients are immuned from this either. They are not, a lot of them regain their weight because they miss their food, the same food they gained weight on, the food they love to eat despite knowing it is killing them.
Weight loss is the easy part, maintaining it is the tough part that people think they are strong enough to do on their own. We really have to be motivated and ready to work because this is where the real work begins. We have to want to do it for the right reasons; we can’t lie to ourselves without having to face it.
Bottom line is, don’t lose weight, get rid of it for good. Do it for you first and for the right reasons. If you don’t know why you have a weight issue, find out, dig deep and if you need help, reach for it. The yo-yo dance is too hard and no one is having a good time. Eat normal food, smaller meals, eat colorful fruits and vegetables, learn how to cook and eat without extra butter, oils and sauces.
I’ve got an idea, follow the Sensei plan, we did the planning for you, we’ll tell you what to buy and how to prepare it too. You’ll learn what to order in restaurants and even fast food. Best of all, it changes as your plans change. Our goal is to have you succeed now and in the long run. Basically, we care, we really do.

This is a great post and so true. In life, especially with dieting and exercise, people are always looking for the quick fix. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You have to work hard and be consistent. It is not a diet but a lifestyle. Very well written.

Oooh, I like this: "Don't lose weight; get rid of it for good." I might turn it into a tattoo. :)
