A few months ago I wrote a blog about how much I love chocolate. I also spoke about its health benefits. The only downside to my chocolate addiction is the amount of calories it contains. Eating chocolate whenever you have a craving can definitely lead to weight gain. Sometimes I just wish I could ‘inhale’ chocolate and skip the calories. Guess what…now I can!
Le Whif is a new chocolate consumption gadget that lets people breathe in chocolate instead of eating it. It was invented by David Edwards, a Harvard Professor. Le Whif is small and resembles a miniature asthma inhaler or lipstick tube. Dr. Edwards theory is that inhaling the Le Whif will satisfy the urge for chocolate without the calories. Sounds good, but will it really satisfy my serious chocolate addiction? I’ll have to try it and find out. I’ll keep you updated.
The whole concept of smelling foods to reduce cravings and therefore cut calories has been around for a long time. Some of the most common foods recommended to sniff are apples, bananas and peppermint. These strong scents are thought to curb your urge to eat. A few years ago, aroma pens were big. The idea was to sniff your pen whenever you had the urge to eat something high in calories or fat. Many people thought it really worked. Aroma pens are still available in some stores or online.
This is a very interesting idea for anyone who loves food as much as I do. I personally believe that my sense of taste will laugh in the face of my sense of smell, but I’m willing to give it a try. Le Whif sells for $51 for a case of 24, so as soon as I find a few friends interested in trying it out with me I’ll purchase some. As a dietitian, I hope it works. According to the Center for Disease Control, 66% of American adults age 20 or older are overweight or obese. That number is scary! Anything that can help decrease that number and increase our overall health is ok with me. So take a ‘WHIF’ and see if it can help you achieve and maintain your healthy weight.
Let me know how it goes!

I just heard about that on the radio last week.
I think I would actually like to eat the chocolate, rather than smelling it!
BUT, if it could cure my sweet tooth, I would be all for that!
