| Magic Diet Pill |

Ok, now that I have your attention, here’s the bad news. It does not exist, “yet”. But so many people have tried to find it and will continue looking for a magic solution, just like with the fountain of youth. Every year there are new products on the market claiming they will “assist” in weight loss. There are fat blockers, carb blockers, those that increase metabolism, appetite suppressants, diuretics, fiber pills and all kinds of other “stuff” that claim to help us, even if it’s only to drop five pounds. But notice that almost all products come with a disclaimer that says something to the effect of, “this product is to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet, calorie restriction and exercise program.”
I’ve always had to know about these products because my clients would ask for my opinion. And over the years, I’ve tried some of them myself to see if they worked without the placebo effect. I would try products without changing anything else in my life, including my eating and exercise (or lack of exercise) regimen. I have not found “it” yet. As soon as I find “it”, I will let you know.
Someone close to me has been on one of these over the counter diet pills. The label does not look “natural”, but all the active ingredients are natural extracts. She is very happy about her 15 lb weight loss “due to the pill”, but what she is not realizing is that she has changed her eating habits too. She’s cut down on her intake of ‘unhealthy snacks’, doesn’t drink wine daily, is eating more vegetables and has reduced her portion sizes. But in her mind it’s the pills’ doing.
I believe it was her decision to get rid of those extra pounds that makes her succeed, not the pills. If she believes that the pills cut down her cravings, then it could be considered a positive because she is eating better. But my concern now is; what will happen when she stops taking these magic pills? Will she loose her motivation and go back to her old habits because she doesn’t have that “crutch”? If she continues eating the way she has for the past few months, she will certainly continue loosing weight and maintaining that weight loss. But like most people who give the power to an “outside” force, once it’s gone, so is the effort and motivation.
Successful weight loss comes from within. The millions of daily food choices we make and the consistent inner dialogue. Knowing that our mind succeeded in quieting down the stomach or blocking a food memory associated with a delicious smell or a friend’s influences. With acknowledgment of small successes, we learn what works for us and what we must avoid. We also must realize that if we had a “weak” moment, it was only a moment. We can carry on because we are smart and we have the power…not a pill, not a person, not a book, but us. If one wants to bring a spirit, a memory or a mantra as a buddy that’s great, but the secret of success remains from the millions of decisions and reminders to stay focused on the goal. We are beautiful, smart and powerful! Say it out loud and smile!
