Last November, Jennifer gave us some great tips on how to keep your smile healthy. Now there's a new study published in the Journal of Periodontology linking green tea to healthy teeth and gums.
The Chinese have believed in the healing properties of green tea for centuries. Today, scientific research is providing hard evidence about its health benefits. Green tea has been linked with weight loss, prevention of heart disease, cancer and inflammation. Many of the benefits of green tea can be attributed to its high polyphenol content. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that protect cells from damaging free radicals.
In this study, it's the class of polyphenols known as catechins that are thought to reduce symptoms of periodontal disease (gum disease). This happens by interfering with the ability of bacteria in the mouth to cause inflammation. Researchers found that an increased daily intake of green tea was associated with a decrease in several factors indicating gum disease.
Gum health is directly related to overall health, so in addition to brushing and flossing on a regular basis and eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy, why not try drinking green tea. You can enjoy it hot or cold and if you're sensitive to caffine try decaffeinated.
