| Foot Nibbling: It's Not Just A Fetish Anymore |
I wish it wasn’t so, but I seem to be an unlikely candidate to experience the fantasy or the reality of a foot nibbling fetish.
Maybe I suffer from low self esteem, maybe I’m just too practical, or ticklish, for my own good, but I only allow myself to have practical and responsible fantasies. I wish it wasn’t so, but it is. If I linger over a picture of a model in a magazine, or walking down the ‘runway’ at a fashion show, I might be admiring her hair color, or trying to figure out how her bangs stay at that perfect angle. I might even think ‘Oh, orange lip gloss might be nice. Perfect hair color, longer bangs, lip gloss that stays on your lips, great mascara…these are my kind of fantasies.
Every once in awhile, my grandmother used to say “once in a blue moon”, I do read about something so new and exciting in fashion or beauty that I allow myself to think about changing my life. I have to force myself to stay at my desk until 5:30. At 5:31 I’m off and running in a hot, desperate pursuit of this life altering experience. My most recent attack of this involved a new brand of mascara that was guaranteed not to contain sticky fibers or clump. When I made my ‘you’ve got to try this’ phone calls to friends that night, urging them to race to the drugstore with $6.00, I found out that I was supposed to be buying the new mascara that was sold exclusively in department stores (cost $29.99), and had some kind of battery that made the wand twirl around and deposit the mascara on your lashes for you!
Then I saw headlines about a revolutionary new way to achieve the softest feet possible. I stared at my toes, and at the suitcase I was packing to join my husband in Las Vegas. I decided to claim this fashion fantasy for myself even though the headline confused me. I want to ‘Do Vegas Right'.This pedicure leaves feet so soft and desirable that someone might want to nibble on your feet in public. I wasn’t sure why that was a good thing. I have enough trouble at the airline security checkpoints. Then I read that “On Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer placed her feet in a tank supplied by Mr. Ho and compared the fish nibbles to tiny little delicate kisses.” I thought this might be a double typo, or a shocking new scandal involving a movie star or politician. Either way I wished it wasn’t so, but I decided it was probably Nancy Grace interviewing the owner of a business whose employees “had been publicly known to employ a live animal in the exfoliation of” something criminal and Nancy Grace was re-enacting the crime.
Can I be forgiven for misunderstanding? Mr. Ho simply “brought skin-eating fish here from China and is letting small fish eat dead skin off his customers’ feet” in the beauty salon he owns. Mr. Ho and his “fish assisted” pedicures have been receiving a lot of attention, including a guest appearance on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer.”
Mr. Ho capitalized on his fame by offering to sell his special pedicure concept, complete with custom tanks designed to allow his littlest employees to work for other salon owners. Unfortunately, “some state pedicure inspectors object, insisting fish pedicures are unsanitary. At least 14 states, including Texas and Florida have outlawed them. The issue: cosmetology regulations generally mandate that tools need to be discarded or sanitized after each use,” and that might be harsh treatment for the little fish. Both PETA and the American Dental Association are swimming clear of this argument. Meanwhile, proponents say “fish pedicures are safe if the water is kept clean.”
Can I trust them, or does this remind you of Mayor Larry Vaughn of Amity Island who so famously told the town it was still safe to swim that summer in Jaws?
I’d really like to know what you think, because as coincidence would have it, “in Nevada last month, state Assemblyman Tick Segerbloom introduced a bill that would allow fish pedicures.” I wish it wasn’t so, but it is, and this may be my one chance to experience the thrill of a lifetime. After all, what happens in Vegas….you know…is so last year, now it’s Do Vegas Right!
