Just Dance!
Have you heard of Zumba? In South Florida, it’s one of the most popular cardiovascular workouts and is quickly becoming popular all over the world. Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy to follow dance moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will really burn some calories. I know a lot of Zumba fanatics. They love it and would take the class every day if they could. I can’t say I’m a fanatic, but I have done the class and I really like it. It’s a great cardio workout and the music and moves are fun. The class flies by and hardly seems like an hour. It’s a great class!

Zumba was created by fitness trainer Beto Perez who is from Columbia, South America. He tells the story of how he forgot his aerobic music one day and was forced to use his favorite Latin music and improvise a class. He threw together some aerobics and dance moves and Zumba was born. He based the class on salsa and meringue. It soon became very popular in Columbia, so he decided to bring the class to the United States where it became popular as well. Currently, there are over 2000 certified Zumba instructors worldwide. Zumba is now offered in gyms and fitness centers all over the world.

To ensure quality instructors, Zumba aligned with some of the largest organizations for fitness professionals such as AFAA (Aerobic and Fitness Association of America) and ACE (American Council on Exercise). This means that if you find a Zumba class near you and the instructor is certified, you will be getting an authentic Zumba workout. If you’re afraid you don’t have any rhythm and would be embarrassed in a class full of Zumba fanatics, you can buy a Zumba DVD. Check out Zumba.com to buy a DVD.

As a Certified Aerobic Instructor for over 15 years, I’ve seen a lot of fitness crazes. Zumba seems to be the craze right now, but I think it is here to stay. Not only is it fun, but it’s effective. You will burn a ton of calories in this class. You can also sculpt your muscles as the class incorporates fast and slow rhythms and resistance training for a total body workout. Give it a try! You can add something new to your workout to keep it fresh and interesting. Go to Zumba.com www.zumba.com to find a class near you.
