Food for the Mood!

It has been long believed that certain foods can put you in the mood for love. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought I would share some of those foods with you. Pick and choose some you might like to try, or create a nice meal that can set the mood for your Valentine’s Day.

Some foods that are often thought of to have aphrodisiac powers include:

Asparagus – Asparagus is frequently thought of as an aphrodisiac food. The Vegetarian Society recommends eating asparagus for three days in a row to get the aphrodisiac effect.

Almonds – Almonds have been a symbol of fertility for hundreds of years. The aroma of almonds is thought to increase passion in women. Try topping roasted asparagus with slivered almonds to get double the effect!

Bananas – Bananas are high in potassium and B vitamins, which are necessary for sex-hormone production.

Basil – The scent of basil is thought to be an aphrodisiac, especially for men. It has also been thought to help increase fertility. Try making a nice tomato and mozzarella salad with fresh basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Chocolate – Of course chocolater will always be associated with love and romance, however it does contain substances that can produce a euphoric feeling.

Chili peppers – Eating chili peppers can have the same effect on the body as making love. When you eat chili peppers your heart rate goes up, you sweat and your circulation increases.

Honey – In ancient times, people put honey in their drinks to increase sexual desire. Honey is rich in B vitamins which are needed for testosterone production and boron which helps the body metabolize and use estrogen. Pour some honey over vanilla ice cream for a sweet dessert.

Oysters – Oysters are probably the most well know aphrodisiac food. They are high in zinc which has been thought to increase sexual potency in men. They also contain a substance which may help in releasing testosterone and estrogen. They make a great appetizer.

Pine nuts - Pine nuts are high in zinc and have been linked to an increase in libido.

Raspberries and Strawberries – These berries are often dipped in chocolate for a sweet and romantic dessert.

Vanilla – The scent and flavor of vanilla are thought to enhance romantic feelings. Many perfumes are made to smell like vanilla.

Of course another obvious choice to set the Valentine’s Day mood is alcohol. It lowers inhibitions and increases confidence but be careful, too much can cause drowsiness which is not good for romance. Try a champagne toast before dinner; it has been called the “drink of love.”

These are just some of the foods that are thought to set a great mood. Although there is little scientific evidence to support these foods as aphrodisiacs, give some of them a try and see for yourself this Valentine’s Day.
