| Favorites of the Week |
 I’m not a “health food freak”, but I do like to control what goes into my body. I rarely eat processed food and the only frozen foods I buy are shrimp, blueberries, leafy green vegetables and corn for my bird Pretty. I just can’t eat frozen meals, even though there are some healthier options out there.
Although I’m not big on frozen foods, I recently found these wonderful frozen CP Shrimp Wonton Soups at Costco. Oh dear! They are so good and only 115 calories per bowl. The sodium is high though, 1430 mg per serving, but it doesn’t taste too salty. They are perfect to keep in the freezer for when you get home late and don’t want to eat much. You can add some chopped green onions, shredded Napa cabbage, fresh or frozen spinach or a few drops of sesame oil. They are wonderful and hopefully can be found at your grocery store as well. The little black plastic containers they come in are perfect to reuse. Just remove the label before you put it in the microwave so the glue doesn’t stick to the bowl.
Have you noticed how many different kinds of yogurt there are now? You can’t necessarily rely on the label to decide which to buy, as you can have a low fat yogurt with 220 calories per cup. One really has to stop and read the nutrition label and ingredient list to decide which one to buy. If you don’t have a personal favorite, you can spend 15 minutes in the refrigerated section to find the one that best fits your taste, budget and health preferences. I’ve always loved the Yoplait brand because they have a beautiful mouth feel, are just sweet enough and they look and taste natural; but I prefer to add my own fruit and sweetener to control the calories.
My favorite nonfat plain yogurt is Brown Cow, and my second favorite is Nancy’s. I prefer the mouth feel of Brown Cow, but both have minimal ingredients. You can print out coupons from their web site too. The Brown cow contains milk, pectin (a natural soluble fiber) and four live active cultures. Nancy’s only has milk, milk powder and six live cultures. Both are low in calories at 110 and 120 calories per cup respectively. I buy the 32 oz container and leave it in the fridge at work. I prefer to buy the large container instead of the individual ones as I use less plastic and it’s actually cheaper.
In the afternoon, I take about one cup of yogurt, add a few drops of Stevia natural sweetener and whatever fruit I have that day like frozen blueberries, grapefruit, orange, mango or fresh berries. If I don’t have any fresh fruit, I will add dried cranberries or chop some delicious dried mango. This is a beautiful and healthy afternoon snack. I hope this is helpful, and you don’t have to freeze your fingers looking for the best yogurts.
