According to the CDC a recent salmonella outbreak has affected 399 people in 42 different states with 18% of those people being hospitalized. The outbreak is under active investigation by multiple government agencies included the Center for Disease Control (CDC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In a related story, King Nut recalled two brands of peanut butter (King Nut and Parnell’s Pride) after they tested positive for salmonella, but no conclusions have been made linking the peanut butter to the national outbreak. King Nut distributes these peanut butter products through food service establishments like hospitals and restaurants so they are not available for purchase directly by consumers. King Nut has reportedly contacted its customers and asked them to remove all King Nut and Parnell’s Pride peanut butter from the market including all products with lot codes beginning with the number 8. They have also canceled orders with the peanut butter manufacturer, Peanut Corporation of America.
Until the source of the outbreak can be identified we encourage you to continue using safe food handling practices including proper washing, storage and cooking. Read our blog on Safe Produce or check out Fightbac.org for more information on safe food handling.
