Investigation into the most recent salmonella outbreak continues as the government urges consumers to avoid products containing peanut butter until more can be learned. The outbreak has affected “more than 470 people in 43 states.” At least 90 people have been hospitalized and at least 6 deaths have been reportedly connected to the outbreak.
Yesterday, McKee Foods, the company that sells Little Debbie snacks, announced a recall of peanut butter crackers because of a potential link to the salmonella outbreak. They join a long list of companies recalling their peanut butter containing products as a cautionary measure. Government officials are now focusing on peanut butter and peanut butter paste produced at a plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America in Blakely, GA. The peanut butter in question is distributed through food services establishments like restaurants and nursing homes, but the peanut butter paste is used as an ingredient in items sold at the supermarket like cakes, cookies and ice cream.
For updates and more information on all product recalls, read the FDA’s most recent report on the outbreak. In the meantime we urge you to check your products at home and avoid products containing peanut butter.
