In honor of Thanksgiving this year I thought it would be fun to test your Turkey Day Nutrition IQ. Answer the following three questions to see how nutrition savvy you really are.
- Which appetizer listed has the least calories?
- Bowl of mixed nuts
- Snack crackers & cheese
- Shrimp cocktail
Show Me The Answer
The answer is c. If you guessed shrimp cocktail for the first question then you are right! Nuts contain heart healthy fats, but the calories add up quickly. Just 1 cup of roasted mixed nuts contains over 800 calories. A plate of cheese & crackers (8 standard snack crackers & 4 oz cheese) is around 560 calories, but the shrimp cocktail (12 shrimp & ¼ cup cocktail sauce) is only about 140 calories.
- How long will the average adult female have to walk to burn off 1 cup of traditional mashed potatoes and gravy?
- 20 minutes
- 30 minutes
- 60 minutes
Show Me The Answer
The answer is c.
A cup of mashed potatoes and gravy is going to be around 250 calories and that means an average female would have to walk for about an hour to burn that off. Considering it’s been estimated that American’s eat upwards of 4,000 calories at a “traditional” holiday meal, you’ll have to do a lot of walking to keep those pounds off!
- Which is the best option?
- Pecan pie
- Apple pie
- Pumpkin pie
Show Me The Answer
The answer is c. Last but not least we have the desserts. Out of the three options listed pumpkin pie is going to be the lowest at around 300 calories per slice. A slice of apple pie is around 400 calories and the pecan pie will be about 500 per slice. Check out this healthy pumpkin pie recipe from meals.com we featured last year. Keep in mind, cutting off the end part of the crust on any of these pieces of pie is going to save you about 100 calories.
Enjoy this special time of year with family and friends, but remember to stay active, be strategic with your indulgences and keep portion sizes reasonable.
Happy Thanksgiving!
