We were all intrigued when we heard about the new shelf stable meals by Healthy Choice. So we couldn’t wait to get a few and do our own in house taste testing.
Preparation is a bit different than your typical frozen or shelf stable meal. These meals require that you add water and cook the rice or pasta first. The sauce, meat and veggies are in another container which is heated separately. Mix them all together and you’re done!
We do applaud Healthy Choice for their creativity; the plastic strainer allows you to make pasta or rice that tastes fresher than those in canned products. Sauce flavors were also quite good. As a dietitian though, I thought they fell short in a few areas.
The majority of calories in the Fresh Mixers meals come from starch. There appeared to be somewhere between 1 to 2 ounces of meat (which is not much) and minimal vegetables in those we tried. You’d need to have some veggies or salad on the side in order to have a balanced meal. With 300-400 calories each, they are higher in calories that many of the ‘healthier’ frozen meals out there.
Bottom line – they are a nice start, but we’re waiting to see the ‘next generation’ of these meals before we get too excited.
