| Junk Food = Budget Food |
The economy has caused most American’s to tighten their food budgets. For some it’s simply a cost saving measure, but for other’s it’s a necessity.
While costs for ‘healthier’ items like fruits and vegetables are on the rise, ‘junk’ food prices have remained relatively unchanged. In addition, limitations in time and cooking skills make choices even more difficult.
So what does this mean for those with limited food budgets? For some it means they are selecting foods they know will fill them up (junk foods), because they don’t know how to prepare healthy meals with their limited food dollars. However, this can lead to obesity and a variety of health problems over time.
Dr. Adam Drewnowski, director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington, has stated that this upcoming year will be all about ‘affordable nutrition’. ‘It’s not the food pyramid, it’s the budget pyramid’ Drewnowski says.
I’ve noticed in our office that everyone is brown bagging more often. We also share info on sales that we find and most of us belong to some sort of food warehouse/club to take advantage of discounts. Because packages are large, we sometimes split items so we can all share in the savings. I’ve even changed where I grocery shop; now driving a little farther to a store with lower prices than the one closest to home.
So what are you doing to eat healthy while you tighten your food budget? Let us know so we can all share the great ideas!
