Burger King “Lowers” Sodium
I was delighted to see that Burger King the world’s second leading hamburger chain, announced yesterday it will limit the amount of sodium in its “Kids Meals” to 600 milligrams or less. Too much sodium in the diet can eventually lead to hypertension or high blood pressure, which is associated with heart disease and stroke. With the ever increasing problem of childhood obesity in our country, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Burger King not only plans to limit sodium, but has also made a “commitment to promote well-balanced meals and active lifestyles to children” according to their website. These efforts can already be seen in some of their current offerings like fortified Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, apples cut to look like fries with low-fat caramel dipping sauce and low fat milk.

Burger King also plans to provide adult customers with meal combinations that are 650 calories or less to assist them in making better choices. I applaud Burger King’s efforts to promote “healthier” eating for children and hope that this trend carries over into their regular menu options.
