Negative calorie foods. Do they exist, and if so what are they and why aren’t we eating them all day? Unfortunately, there aren’t really any “negative calorie foods”. The lowest value of calories a food can have is 0 which is not a negative number. Therefore the term negative calorie food is misleading. The good news is that there are some very low calorie foods that take a lot of energy to digest. This can result in a net loss of calories. The loss of calories really isn’t that significant and probably won’t be responsible for a large amount of weight loss, but eating these foods as part of a healthy diet can keep you feeling full and satisfied without going over your calorie needs. Most of these “negative calorie foods” are fruits and vegetables which are always a better choice for a snack than high calorie items like candy, cookies or chips.
Here is a list of some of the so called negative calorie foods. They might not be the answer to the obesity problem in the United States, but they are nutritious foods that can be part of a healthy diet and they just might help you lose a pound or two.
