| Mediterranean Diet saves lives! |
Once again my dear Mediterranean diet is in the news. I like it when I can report the effects of a healthy diet on people’s health, especially if it includes red wine!
This time, a group of Italian researchers looked at 12 previous “studies that analyzed prospectively the association between adherence to a Mediterranean diet, mortality, and incidence of diseases; with a total of 1,574,299 subjects followed for a time ranging from three to 18 years were included.” Right there, it already sounds impressive.
And their conclusion was:
“Greater adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with a significant improvement in health status, as seen by a significant reduction in overall mortality (9%), mortality from cardiovascular diseases (9%), incidence of or mortality from cancer (6%), and incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease (13%). These results seem to be clinically relevant for public health, in particular for encouraging a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern for primary prevention of major chronic diseases.”
If this isn’t an incentive to adhere to the Mediterranean diet, I don’t know what is! It’s so simple and makes so much sense. Simply, eat foods closer to their natural state. Some people call it whole food, that’s ok. What ever you call it, just eat the least processed foods you can. Eat whole grain products, lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like nuts and olive oil, legumes like lentils and beans and low-fat dairy products. Favor fish, seafood, eggs and poultry over meats like beef and pork, drink plenty of water, maybe enjoy a glass of red wine a day (if you choose to drink) and include some kind of physical activity on a daily basis.
It you think about it, it’s quite simple and much cheaper, because you will be avoiding all the processed food, unhealthy snacks, soft drinks and other stuff that you know you should not be eating.
Go for it! Jump on the “Healthy Mediterranean Train”.
Santé!
