| Food Fest |

If you don’t like fruits and vegetables, you are missing a lot this time of year. This is the prefect time to try something new as most fruits and veggies will taste their best. And if you are lucky enough to live close to a fresh market, WOW, I envy you! You would think they’d abound here in South Florida, but unfortunately they don’t. I would love to travel the world and experience all the different food festivals: garlic, hot peppers, pecans, lobster, crab, truffles, cheese, and wine. But for a little fiber and some anti-oxidants why not go to the blueberry festival this weekend in Michigan? And if you miss that one, try the one in Indiana on Labor Day weekend or catch a flight to Québec for something totally different.
Actually, I had the best blueberry pie ever after picking them in the wild among the deer in Lac St-Jean. It’s located really far north in the Province of Québec, maybe 4-5 hours north of Québec City. We picked them and then made a pie. I was probably only 11 years old, but I still remember that pie. There’s nothing like home made food, especially if you worked all day for it. Just ask a fisherman, but don’t ask the hunter.
But as wonderful as that pie was, there is still nothing like eating fresh fruit, plain just to experience the non-altered flavors. I’ve never had a dinner guest complain when I present a bowl of fresh cherries or berries for dessert. Actually, people prefer it as they are already satisfied by the good meal they just consumed. We don’t need the extra calories from dessert, especially if we had wine with dinner. When fruit is served in a nice serving dish or martini glass, maybe drizzle with a little Limoncello, Grand Marnier or Chambord liquor, this is as good as it gets! Or how about fresh strawberries, with a dollop of sour cream (low fat of course) and a drizzle of “real” maple syrup? Don’t say no before trying it.
When it’s apple picking time I will tell you about “TarteTatin”, but meanwhile if you happen to go to a nice French restaurant and it’s on the menu, please try it, but without the ice cream. Then I will discuss pears poached in red wine or see what the change of seasons brings.
Enjoy eating fresh colors!
