Yet another health nod for the Mediterranean (Med) diet. Recently published research in the British Medical Journal has shown that the Med diet can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 83 percent. Wow!
In the study 13,380 grad students without a history of diabetes were followed for an average of 4.4 years. Those who followed the Med diet most closely were at the lowest risk for developing type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent).
The Med diet has long been promoted for its cardiovascular benefits. It’s rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, fiber and fish with the main fat coming from heart healthy, monounsaturated, olive oil. Researchers felt that although these types of foods (listed above) may have contributed to the study results, virgin olive oil was thought to be a key reason for the reduced diabetes risk.
